Globe, Pilipinas Shell Foundation in Fight against Malaria

Globe Telecom and Pilipinas Shell Foundation, Inc. (PSFI) have joined hands in the campaign against malaria through the installation of a responsive information system that will allow health practitioners to provide critical analysis and immediate action on malaria cases.

Under a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) signed recently, Globe and PSFI committed to work together and to pull their resources toward the enhancement of the reporting mechanism in the top five malaria endemic provinces of Palawan, Apayao, Quirino, Sulu and Tawi-Tawi.

PSFI is the Principal Recipient of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria Round 5 Malaria Component. The program, tagged the Movement Against Malaria (MAM), seeks to bring down malaria morbidity and mortality rates by 70 percent as against 2003 recorded cases in the five project areas by introducing and sustaining proven and innovative strategies in malaria control. MAM is implemented in support of the Department of Health’s National Malaria Control Program vision of a malaria-free Philippines by year 2020.

Using Globe’s infrastructure and technological capability, Globe and PSFI came out with the Malaria InfoText service, an SMS (Short Messaging Service) channel that enables MAM health workers and volunteers to send and receive reports concerning the disease.

Globe, through its corporate arm Globe Business, will provide an end-to-end solution through TxtConnect plus BizTxt) that will enable PSFI to collect reports on status of cases, drug inventory, and on other activities from more than 500 sites nationwide. The system collates the reports in a form which PSFI can use to monitor and assess the progress of malaria control initiatives in the five provinces. The strategy is seen to hasten PSFI’s response in mitigating outbreaks, stock outs, and other untoward incidences that can hamper MAM from meeting its objectives.
Malaria InfoText emphasizes ease and convenience, thus, it requires minimal training for users. It has also the flexibility to add related processes if needed such as information about other life-threatening diseases.
