O+ 8.12 vs. Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini

One of our readers asked whether the Galaxy S3 is a good buy since they can’t afford the bigger and more expensive Galaxy S3. We stepped back and gave them a number of options, including alternatives to the S3 Mini.

One of them is the O+ 8.12 which we reviewed here earlier. and we put them together for a side by side comparison.

Samsung banked on the popularity of the Galaxy S3 and created the S3 Mini hoping they’d sell more of them. However, aside from the exterior design similarities, the internal hardware configuration is totally different.

The O+ 8.12 is a fairly new brand that came from the US. They offer entry to mid-level handsets, some of them with dual-SIM functionality.

O+ 8.12 specs:

Processor and RAM.

Both the S3 Mini and O+ 8.12 uses a 1.0GHz dual core processor and 1GB of RAM. Samsung used their own processor based on a Cortex A9 CPU and Mali-400 MP GPU while the O+ 8.12 utilizes a Mediatek processor and PowerVR SGX531 GPU.

Ultimately, the benchmarks will dictate which is the better processor so we’re giving both equal points in this round.

Internal Storage.

Samsung is pretty generous with the internal storage of the S3 Mini with 16GB as the base storage while O+ 8.12 only offer 4GB internal storage. Both devices offer expandable storage of up to 32GB via micro SD card.

Galaxy S3 Mini wins this round.

The Galaxy S3 Mini uses a Super AMOLED display in a 4.0-inch screen. However, the low resolution of 800×400 pegs it at just 233ppi. The O+ 8.12, on the other hand, uses regular LCD (a scratch-resistant one) but with a much higher screen size at 4.5-inches and all the while still having higher resolution (960×540 pixels) and pixel density (245ppi).

This gives the O+ 8.12 a bigger edge over the S3 Mini.

The S3 Mini has more options for connectivity — up to 14Mbps on HSPA, WiFi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0 and NFC. The O+ 8.12 only has up to 7.2Mbps on HSPA, WiFi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 2.1 and no NFC. The O+ 8.12 has dual-SIM functionality though.

It’s too hard to call so we’re giving both equal points for this round.

The O+ 8.12 uses an 1,850mAh Li-Po battery while the S3 Mini only has 1500mAh. The O+ 8.12 has more battery by 23% and wins this round.

Benchmark Scores.

To see the relative performance of the two handset, we ran Antutu Benchmark and Quadrant between the two. The O+ 8.12 got a score of 6,757 on Antutu while the S3 Mini got 5,438. Quadrant score of S3 Mini is around 3,000 while )+ 8.12 got 2,713.

It’s a close call but the O+ 8.12 wins this round by a short margin.

OS and Apps.

Both handsets runs on Android but the S3 Mini comes with the latest Jellybean version while the O+ 8.12 is still on ICS. The S3 Mini easily wins this round.

The O+ 8.12 packs an 8MP rear camera with 720p recording while the S3 Mini only has a 5MP with the same 720p video recording. The O+ 8.12 wins this round.

Retail Price.

The O+ 8.12 is more affordable at Php11,995 while the Galaxy S3 Mini retails for Php14,990.The S3 Mini is more expensive by 25% so the former wins this round.

Both handsets have their respective strengths and weaknesses. Samsung definitely banked on the popularity of the Galaxy S3 so there’s no doubt they will sell a lot of the S3 Mini.

O+ is a fairly new brand and has projected a really good name in the market. They’ve also added a few unique features into their handsets that we have not seen anywhere else. One example is the Air Shuffle — it’s a nice little trick that allows you to switch between photos and songs with a wave of the hand. It looks a bit gimmicky but at least you know they’re doing something different and not just copy others.

The Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini got an over-all score of 4 points while the O+ 8.12 got a high of 7 points in the 9 various categories we pitted them together.

    Haha O+ 8.12 really is a good buy. I just bought one . Sobrang ganda daw ng design according to my coworkers who are using samsung and iphone. 4gb lang internal storage but no matter because most apps can be installed or moved to the memory card. About sa gaming performance aus talga I can play dungeon hunter 4, chaos rings, ff3, nfs most wanted, dead trigger, plants vs zombies, house of the dead, final fantasy 7, 8, 9 using epsxe. Everyrhing else is good.
